Electronic Document Services based on Oakland, California

Founder, President ~ March 1996 – December 2008

Document Solutions, Inc. was the world’s first electronic document service bureau dedicated to PDF technology. The company was first to market with a number of innovations, including:

  • Interactive CD-ROMs with all-PDF (and thus, cross-platform) interfaces (1996).
  • “MultiResolution PDF” combining high-resolution bitonal scanned pages with lossy color JPEG images for maximum image quality at the lowest-possible file size (1997). Now commercially known as MRC, MultiResolution PDF was very popular with academic publishers in particular. DSI scanned and converted millions of pages using this technique.
  • Interactive PDF forms services, with over 30,000 insurance forms made interactive in the first year (1998).
  • PDF accessibility services, enabling PDF files for disabled users who must use assistive technology to read (2001).

DSI’s clients included publishers, engineering organizations, pharmaceutical companies, law-firms, and government agencies.
